A Day in Our Life - August

1 August 2006

A pastoral measure creates the new parish of St Mary and Holy Trinity, Bow. Rev Michael Peet becomes the first Rector of the merged parish.

 

8 August 1831

An official order from the Public Office, Whitechapel, instructs our Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor to remove one Elizabeth Finch, a single homeless woman who had come to Bow from her home parish of West Ham.

 

14 August 1642

In a pamphlet entitled 'A Diurnal of Dangers for August 14, 1642', we read about a terrorist plot against us. The terrorists had mounted six pieces of ordnance in Moorfields "their full intention was to batter down Bow and make pillage of the green geese". The perpetrators were arrested.

 

24 August 1642

This was the date of the birth of Priscilla Forster, daughter to Anne and John Forster (a former curate of St Mary), who was later the wife of Thomas Coborn and, of course, became known as Prisca Coborn.

 

24 August 1940

Tower Hamlets Cemetery is hit in a bombing raid - the first bombs to fall on London since 1918.

 

28 August 1642
